LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FOR June 8th, 2023, IS POSTED FOR YOUR REVIEW

My fellow Sons, Today, Wednesday, April 15, AMVETS National Headquarters issued a memorandum to their Departments regarding Department Conventions.

Fellow Sons, “Stay at Home” directives combined with Post closings has impacted and isolated many Veterans and AMVETS family members. Limited social contact can lead to loneliness, low self-esteem, and fear of the unknown. Experts agree that social interaction is vital to maintain physical and mental health.

Fellow Sons, AMVETS family members, and friends,

My fellow Sons,

I am sure by now you are all as sick as I am over the Coronavirus and the phrase “out of an abundance of caution”.  That being said, many states have shut down all food service and drinking establishments and with them most of the Posts.

The Sons of AMVETS Squadron 1-ME, an integral part of the AMVETS family of Post 1 in Biddeford, is organizing a golf tournament and is seeking hole sponsorships at a cost of $50.00 per hole. All sponsors will have a sign set up at a hole or holes for all to see.

The “Pine Tree” State, AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 1 & Sons of AMVETS Squadron 1 will be hosting a TESTIMONIAL DINNER to proudly honor the Sons of AMVETS National Commander of 2019-2020, Richard H. Thibodeau.

Vietnam Veteran John Hawkins served as Commander of AMVETS Post 274 in Carlisle, PA in 2017-2018. In May 2019, Commander John suffered a stroke. Presently he resides in the Middleton Home in Middleton, PA.

Attention ALL Sons and AMVETS family members,

The Department of Illinois will be hosting an ILLINOIS NIGHT/BLOCK PARTY on Wednesday, August 19th during our 2020 National Convention.

Fellow Sons and friends,

On February 26, 2020, AMVETS National Commander Jan Brown delivered testimony to the Joint Veterans Affairs Committee regarding Veteran issues, Legislative Goals, and Objectives.

The Sons of AMVETS in the “Pine Tree” state combined resources donated to Commander Eric Rodzen’s Project with funds from Past National Commander Ken Barber’s Project, Mission: Veterans Mobility, to provide DIRECT TO VET assistance to Rod Anderson. Rod is a Vietnam War Veteran and active AMVETS family member at his Post and in the Department.

Commander Mick's Project - Gary Sinise Foundation

Fellow Sons, AMVETS Family, and Friends,

During our 40th Anniversary year I have selected the Gary Sinise Foundation (GSF) as my project. The Gary Sinise Foundation serves our nation by honoring our defenders, our veterans, our first responders, our country’s heroes, and their families, and those in need.

They accomplish their mission by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen, and build communities. Their R.I.S.E. program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment), builds specially adapted smart homes for our most severely wounded heroes. They also provide home modifications, mobility devices, and adapted vehicles to our injured, wounded, ill, and/or aging heroes.

Another GSF program is Soaring Valor. You may find it interesting that fewer than 500,00 World War II Veterans are still with us. Through Soaring Valor, World War II veterans and their guardians are brought to New Orleans to tour The National WWII Museum built in their honor. Their experience includes entertainment, celebratory meals, and community building with their fellow heroes. Students who accompany our veterans continue their stories with a new appreciation for the sacrifices made by an entire generation, the Greatest Generation. As a Son of a World War II Marine, it is imperative that we make every attempt to honor those Veterans.

The GSF Snowball Express, serves the children and surviving spouse of fallen military heroes. GSF is committed to programming and support that holds space to honor their fallen heroes while also helping create new memories as they move forward. Since 2018, 11639 children of fallen military heroes & their surviving parent/guardian joined us for Snowball Express.

To learn about other GSF programs or help us do a little more by making a donation, please visit: https://donate.garysinisefoundation.org/SonsCommanderProject

Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.

Sincerely,

Michael ‘Mick’ Ciesla - Commander

National Sons of AMVETS
